Egypt to supply Gas to Lebanon

As Egyptian gas must pass through Syrian and Jordanian territories to reach Lebanon, Egypt required the US approval and guarantees that the US Caesar Act’s financial sanctions on Syria would not negatively impact the deal.

Lebanese Caretaker Energy Ministry has announced that an agreement will be signed with Egypt to supply gas. The agreement is expected to ease the electricity crisis of the country that has provoked massive protests. The Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in a statement said that a plan of action and a timetable for implementation is getting finalised.

The proposed deal has been in the pipeline for several months. In September 2020, it was agreed to supply Egyptian natural gas to Lebanon through Jordanian and Syrian pipelines (the Arab Gas Pipeline). As Egyptian gas must pass through Syrian and Jordanian territories to reach Lebanon, Egypt required the US approval and guarantees that the US Caesar Act’s financial sanctions on Syria would not negatively impact the deal. The Egyptian natural gas was exported to Lebanon through the Jordanian territories in 2009, but it was halted in 2011 after the uprising in January 2011.
