Egypt is witnessing an increase in the incidence of Covid-19 cases during the holy month of Ramadan as the North African country is gearing itself to set up the vaccine making unit with the Russian and Chinese firms. The joint venture with the Russian company will manufacture Sputnik V, the vaccination for prevention of Covid-19. There has been a weekly increase of up to 10 percent in some areas amid a third wave of the pandemic. The administration is taking care to bring the situation under control particularly when it is happening during Holy Ramadan, when there is an increased possibility for people coming together to break the fast.
Egypt proposes to produce 80 million doses of the Chinese vaccine and 40 million doses of the Russian vaccine annually. As a run up to it, the Chinese expertise will be arriving in a few days. To begin with, the Chinese facility will manufacture 40 million vaccine doses this year, which can be increased later to reach the target set for 80 million units . Egypt intends to supply the vaccine to both Arab and African countries from these facilities that are coming up.
Egypt has a population of 100 million people. The number of Covid -19 cases reported till date is over 220,000 cases and almost 13,000 deaths. The country, it is reported, has inadequate testing facilities.
