Egypt will resort to auctioning of its clean energy sector projects for those who quote the lowest price for consumers, according to Deputy Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Osama Asran. Egypt had succeeded in obtaining offers at a competitive price amounting to US$ 2 cents per kilowatt/ hour for energy produced from solar power plants and US$ 3 cents per kilowatt/hour for energy produced from wind farms.
A huge parcel of land -7,650 km2 – has been allocated to implement clean energy projects that accommodate capacities of 35 gigawatts of wind energy and 55 gigawatts of solar energy. The energy strategy of the country envisages maximizing the contribution of clean energy sources by 2035. The contribution of clean energy sources to the total energy produced by that time would be 42%.
Egypt has signed 32 agreements to purchase energy from solar energy, with a current total capacity of 1,465 megawatts. Egypt has a clear advantage in sustainable renewable energy sources, such as wind and sun, as the country has potentials of wind speeds that are among the highest in the world, as well as the high average direct solar radiation because it is in the solar belt.
