Population growth in Egypt is declining. In 2023, it slowed to 1.4%, its lowest rate in decades, according to figures from Egypt’s Ministry of Planning data published.

Egypt is the most populous country in the Arab world, with 106 million inhabitants. The fall in population is good news for the government. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had already warned of the burden of the birth rate on public finances and government services.

Over 60% of the population lives at or near the poverty line. The Northern African country is also facing an infrastructure deficit in terms of schools and hospitals, among other things.  The current population of Egypt in 2024 is 114,484,252, a 1.57% increase from 2023, according to the UN projections. The population of Egypt in 2023 was 112,716,598, a 1.56% increase from 2022. The population of Egypt in 2022 was 110,990,103, a 1.58% increase from 2021.

More than 95% of Egypt’s population lives on a mere 5% of the country’s surface, in the Nile Delta, along the river banks of the Nile Valley, and in the immediately outlying cities of Alexandria and Port Said. The total population in Egypt was forecast to continuously increase between 2023 and 2028 by a total of 11 million people (+10.41 percent).
