Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, hosted his Turkish counterpart Haken Fidan in Cairo recently to discuss developments in the Gaza Strip. Fidan reiterated Turkey’s strong condemnation of any attacks targeting innocent civilians and also expressed Turkey’s disapproval of what he referred to as Israel’s policy of deporting Palestinians to Egypt.
The Turkish foreign minister candidly said that his country did not approve of the policy of displacing Palestinians in Gaza and deporting them to Egypt and added that Turkey stood with Egypt on this issue. The Egyptian foreign minister said that the Palestinian people in Gaza are severely affected and highlighted the importance of containing this conflict. He also insisted on the importance of full adherence to the rules of international humanitarian law and respecting non-targeting and harming the civilian population. Civilians are at risk from either side.
Israel has been bombarding Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in a bid to destroy the Islamist group after the Islamists stormed Israel’s southern border a week ago, shooting dead civilians in their homes, on the roads, and at a rave party. Some 1,300 people were killed in Hamas’ attack on Israeli soil, while Gaza authorities said bombardments by Israel have claimed 2,215 lives.
In the meantime, Pro-Palestinian rallies, both organized and spontaneous, in response to the conflict between Israel and Gaza-based militant groups have taken the MENA region by storm. In North Africa, demonstrators gathered in Algeria, Libya, and Morocco to show support in favor of Palestine.
Despite, Morocco’s normalized ties with Israel in exchange for US recognition of its sovereignty over the long-disputed Western Sahara territory, Prince Moulay Hicham El Alaoui, cousin to the Moroccan monarch, has voiced his support for Palestine on social media. Thousands of Moroccans also protested to ask the government to put an end to the normalization.
