Egypt and Saudi Arabia are strategizing ways to help Libya to have a smooth presidential election next week to ensure stability of the country ravaged by internal tensions for more than a decade..
Recently, chief diplomat of Egypt Sameh Shukry and his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan said it was important for the Libyan presidential elections to go ahead as scheduled. The latter was on a visit to Cairo. Both leaders maintained that it was important for the Libyan presidential elections to go ahead as scheduled. The election is supposed to take place in just over a week, but calls are mounting for a delay.
The vote is scheduled for December 24. For nearly a year, efforts are underway to hold the election to bring peace to the oil-rich North African nation. Supporters of the election fear a dangerous void if it is not held on schedule. However, there are skeptics who fear that the vote now could throw the country into a new bout of violence.
Significantly, at a press conference held at Cairo to coincide with his visit, Farhan expressed support for Egypt’s position in relation to a controversial dam in Ethiopia on the Nile River’s main tributary.
