The Egyptian State Information Service announced that Egypt has secured support from Morocco to establish a regional biomanufacturing hub for North Africa. This approval came after Cairo received backing from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). Morocco has consistently expressed its commitment to supporting CDC Africa and its objective to meet 60% of Africa’s vaccine needs.

In partnership with Morocco, Egypt will set up the Regional Center for Capacity Building in Biomanufacturing (RCCN), following the acceptance of Egypt’s proposal. The Unified Procurement Authority, part of the Egyptian Vaccine Manufacturers Alliance, submitted the bid. Egyptian Minister of Higher Education, Ayman Ashour, stated that Egypt’s selection reflects a dedication to enhancing pharmaceutical manufacturing, particularly vaccine production.

Morocco has also demonstrated expertise in this field, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020. Officials from Africa CDC praised Morocco’s proactive measures to combat the pandemic. Nkengason, Deputy Director for Global Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, acknowledged Morocco’s vaccine manufacturing efforts during the pandemic, emphasizing that these initiatives will aid in addressing COVID-19 not only in Morocco but across the continent. He also expressed CDC Africa’s support for Morocco’s initiatives and highlighted the country’s contributions to approximately 20 African nations during the health crisis.
