Egypt aims to increase the gross domestic product (GDP) contribution of its agriculture sector to 12 percent by 2024. This requires increasing agricultural production by 30 percent by 2024, says Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Said. Growth of agriculture at this level would result in
creating more job opportunities in the sector, apart from increasing the income of small farmers and exports. The share of the agriculture sector in the country’s exports will increase from 17% now to 25% in 2024, the minister said.
El-Said was participating at a high-level dialogue on food security in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, which took place recently organized by the World Bank as a part a series of events organized for the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Egyptian minister spoke about investments and future reforms in the food system in Egypt, with the country’s food sector managing to address the effects of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
In her presentation, the minister also stressed that the country did not face any shortages of food or a decline in any of the
strategic crops. Egypt was also able to ensure food security for the poorest groups. Agriculture and food production are among the most attractive investment opportunities in Egypt, he added.
