 Akol will replace Uganda’s longest-serving auditor general John Muwanga who has been in office since 2001 and is now superannuated. The office of the auditor general, a mandatory position is enshrined in the Constitution.

Uganda’s Parliament’s appointments committee has approved the appointment of Edward Akol as the new auditor general.  The committee chaired by the Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among approved the appointment. The Parliament committee also vetted Linda Lillian Mugisha Tumusiime and Anthony Patrick Wabwire for their appointments as judges.

Akol will replace Uganda’s longest-serving auditor general John Muwanga who has been in office since 2001 and is now superannuated. The office of the auditor general, a mandatory position is enshrined in the Constitution. The incumbent of the post is responsible for producing reliable and high-quality reports, good governance, transparency, and effective accountability in the management and use of public resources.

Akol has risen through the ranks at the auditor general’s office since August 1994. He has served as the director of the audit and assistant auditor general in charge of the audit.
