    To resolve the political deadlock in Mali, and restore civilian rule, the leaders of ECOWAS has urged the Malian Transitional Authority (MTA) to take steps and announce the timetable for the general elections scheduled for February 2022.

To resolve the political deadlock in Mali, and restore civilian rule, the leaders of ECOWAS have urged the Malian Transitional Authority (MTA) to take steps and announce the timetable for the general elections scheduled for February 2022. It has emphasized that timelines for elections in Mali is non-negotiable.

The regional bloc has advised the Malian Transitional Authority to submit, the timetable and the road map for the February 2022 elections latest by the end of October 2021.

Although economic sanctions were imposed on the junta in Mali last year, they were, subsequently, lifted after it committed to holding democratic elections in February 2022. However, there are concerns about the prospect of next year’s elections as the military continues to be in power.
