The West African leaders in an emergency summit held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly being held in New York agreed to impose gradual sanctions on Guinea’s junta over its inflexibility in setting a date to return to civilian rule. The region is in the grip of turmoil and is facing coups. First, it was Mali which had faced coups in August 2020 and May 2021. This was followed by Guinea in September 2021 and Burkina Faso in January this year. In the meantime, Guinea’s military leader attended Mali’s 62nd-anniversary celebrations. Mamadi Doumbouya was in Bamako, where he was received by Mali’s military ruler Asssimi Goïta upon arrival. The two leaders are reported to have discussed a number of bilateral issues.
