A delegation of ECOWAS ministers arrived on Monday (yesterday) in Burkina Faso, one week after a military coup that ousted president Roch Marc Christian Kaboré. Earlier, there was a virtual summit last Friday to discuss the security situation in the country, which was reported by www.trendsnafrica.com.

The delegation is led by Ms. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, minister of foreign affairs of Ghana and is expected to hold wide ranging discussions with stakeholders in Burkina Faso. The delegation will also hold parleys with the head of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel region.

After the meetings, the delegation will head to Accra where an ECOWAS summit is scheduled to take place on Thursday. Importantly, ECOWAS leaders suspended Burkina Faso from the regional organisation. The meeting at Accra is slotted to discuss the recent turmoil in some of the member countries in the region and is expected to evolve a roadmap for avoiding such situations in the future. ECOWAS had received criticisms for its laidback role in containing these developments, from various quarters.
