Bangladesh and Mozambique have the opportunities to increase bilateral trade, such as of agricultural products and fish, alongside tourism, said MA Momen, vice-president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), while addressing a 5-member delegation from Mozambique recently at Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh.

Momen said that Bangladesh could even import gas from the southern African nation.   Both countries, he said,  were strategic business hubs and could benefit from a more robust trade and economic partnership.

Mostofa Azad Chowdhury Babu, senior vice president of the FBCCI said that his country was trying to increase business ties with the southern economic bloc of Africa by enhancing trade and investment. He also opined that bilateral trade could be considerably upped by the exchange of goods like apparel, leather goods, pharmaceuticals, frozen seafood, plastic products, ceramics, jute and leather products, home appliances, and others.  Bangladeshi investors can set up these industries in Mozambique and explore opportunities there to export products through the Southern African Development Community (SADC)  availing the facilities under the African Growth and Opportunity Act of the US and to the European Union availing both logistic advantage and concessional entry to West European markets. Bangladeshi could also explore the opportunity to invest in areas bearing potential in Mozambique such as in agricultural equipment, road construction, railways, energy, fishing, and ICT; he added.

Jose Matsinha, director general for Asia and Oceania at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique, who led the 5-member delegation said that both countries could gain immensely from each other’s potential. He endorsed the views expressed by the FBPCCI presidium that Mozambique could be a springboard for the south Asian country both for exports and investments into the expanding continent of Africa.
