The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and NKC African Economics (an Oxford Economics company) launched today a joint report on “Best Practices in Job Creation, Lessons from Africa.” The comprehensive report covers 15 African countries and 34 employment initiatives, which included Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Tunisia.

The report shares successful job creation policies to provide insights and learning for other countries across the region. Report points out that skill development and education improve employability of youth besides instilling in them the spirit of entrepreneurship. The report also underscores the need for women empowerment.  Aligning public sector employment with that of private sector business priorities is another major recommendation of the report.

The set of recommendations contained in the report include use of incentives for skill development to address the mismatch between demand and supply. Targeting of small enterprises for job creation, promoting public-private partnerships, accelerating flow of investments, ensuring access to credit etc can help promote industrialization in the country, which in turn can create employment are some of the key recommendations of the report.
