The Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) has announced that the bid for two new nationwide telecommunications service licenses has closed today (26 April 2021). The Ethiopian Ministry of Finance, said that it has received the bids from two giant telecom operators, MTN Group Limited, and a consortium including Safaricom (Kenya), Vodafone Group (UK), Vodacom Group (South Africa), CDC Group (UK), and Sumitomo Corporation (Japan).
ECA in a communication, while thanking the bidders, said that among the bidders include some of the well known names, which have global footprints. It assured that competitive bidding will take place to ensure the country gets the best deal.
ECA has called for the bids from the private players to induct the public private partnership model in the state-run ECA. Through the election model, ECA thinks that it can ensure more revenue to the cash strapped telecom department.
