In a significant development, the Libyan National Army headed by eastern commander Khalifa Haftar gave a final opportunity to draw up a road map for elections in the country. This comes one year after the rival factions agreed to hold the polls.

The head of the eastern command was addressing Libyans in the second-largest city of Benghazi, home to his forces, on the 71st anniversary of Libya’s independence. After a 2020 ceasefire, the rival eastern and western sides agreed to hold elections on Dec. 24, 2021. But it did not fructify because of the stiff resistance of the rival factions. To gain power through the electoral process, the eastern command installed a new unity government that was meant to reunify the divided national institutions.  But the process fell apart because of opposition from the opposite camps.

The Libyan Crisis can be tracked down to the civil war in 2011 called the Arab Spring Protests leading to a civil war and the subsequent ouster of Gadhafi. This paved the way for instability in the oil-rich country for political control, leading to the death of thousands of people.

The continued conflicts in the region between two main factions of rival governments and the presence of outside forces from countries like Turkey, Russia, etc have further deteriorated the return of peace and harmony in the Northern African country.  In December 2015, the United Nations brokered a peace deal. But it failed to give the expected result since it could not bring warring groups into a negotiated settlement as of now and hold the elections.
