E-commerce Boom in Algeria

(3 Minutes Read)

E-commerce in Algeria is worth more than 1.5 billion dollars, while the threshold of 18 million payment cards in circulation has been passed, Abdelouahab Gaoua, Chairman of the Algerian Digital Players Group (GAAN), has unveiled the value of the e-commerce market in Algeria.

For the GAAN Chairman, e-commerce as a ‘strategic lever’ to accelerate digital transformation facilitates access to digital technologies for businesses, particularly SMEs while promoting financial inclusion by broadening access to new financial services through fast and secure payment solutions. E-commerce is an essential part of today’s economic life and can foster economic development by enabling businesses to access new markets and improve their competitiveness, while at the same time stimulating economic growth, Gaoua added.

Despite the growth in the value of the e-commerce market in Algeria and the wide range of players on offer, professionals are still faced with several challenges, including the persistence of cash payments in e-commerce, according to several speakers.

In Algeria, 95% of online purchases are paid for in cash, which creates several constraints for logistics operators (transport and delivery companies)’, according to data presented by GAAN member Anis Ababsia, who pointed out in the same context the need to densify the network of Algerian websites dedicated to e-commerce, even though this activity is essentially carried out via social networks.

Abou Bakr Belloul, Head of Division at GIE Monétique, said that next year would see the launch of new electronic payment methods, citing instant payments via TPE and contactless payments.
