South African President Cyril Ramaphosa received the Dutch royal couple, King Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria recently. Both the King and Queen were on a state visit at the invitation of President Ramaphosa. Both countries are looking at strengthening the ties and partnership between the Netherlands and South Africa.
Ramaphosa, while flagging the opportunities for both countries to come together, referred to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The recent outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict also came up during the discussions, which has left thousands dead and many more wounded. He stressed the need for building a peaceful, harmonious, and conflict-free world, where inclusivity and development should be the hallmark of human progress.

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander commended South Africa’s fighting spirit to end apartheid and the country’s commitment to reconciliation following the end of Dutch colonial rule in 1795. His Majesty said that since the 1960’s the Netherlands had a broad awareness of the injustice done to the black population. The royal couple also visited Cape Town, where they met the city’s mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, and the premier, Alan Winde.
