In its latest forecast, issued on August 26th, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), has stated that the Greater Horn of Africa will likely see drier-than-average conditions in most areas from October to December (OND) 2022.This is the fifth consecutive failed rainy season and the longest drought in 40 years in the Horn of Africa.
As per the IGAD projections, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia’s drought-hit regions cannot expect enough rains until the end of the year. Guleid Artan, director of IGAD’S Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), stated that Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia are on the verge of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with almost 4.6 million malnourished children. The crisis is compounded by the macroeconomic problems, triggered by the Ukraine war, such as rising food and fuel prices on global markets. IGAD called for urgent support by governments, donors, and development actors to weather the crisis.
