Despite being one of the richest countries in the natural resources of the world, he asserted that the DRC was still very dependent on imports in terms of sustenance.
Nobel-winning gynaecologist and presidential aspirant Denis Mukwege of the Democratic Republic of Congo staged a rally recently in his own hometown Bukavu, promising to tackle corruption and conflict if elected president next month. He promised to put an end to famine and to fight graft and assured that he would work for a DRC where peace and tranquillity exist.
Despite being one of the richest countries in the natural resources of the world, he asserted that the DRC was still very dependent on imports in terms of sustenance. Notwithstanding having a good cover of rainforest, Mukwege said that the country was facing poverty and famine. He said that he would encourage the population to achieve food self-sufficiency. By focusing more on agriculture.
Mukwege lamented the poor governance, lack of industrialization, lack of accountability on the part of the government, and obligation to work for the betterment of the country among the people who are responsible for administering the course of development of the country. He hit hard on the present crop of politicians, who are sold out more to demagogues than producing results that can help the country move in the value chain. The continued effort of the government to import everything including food grains, despite having fertile land, he pointed out, was an example of lop-sided policies.
