The Democratic Republic of Congo had expressed its keenness to join the East African Community (EAC) since June 2019. Its membership proposal in EAC with regard to its compliance with the organisation has been under assessment for the last few months. Finally on March 28, DRC joined the East African Community . An official ceremony was held virtually followed by a Summit to launch the new EAC member that has common borders with five member states of the organization – Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and South Sudan. Several EAC countries are DRC’s main African trading partners.
DRC’s membership is expected to give a boost to its economic, social and political ties with the region. DRC will derive several benefits as part of the regional bloc. The eastern part of the country will get integrated into the common telecommunications space, which will reduce costs with neighbouring countries; many administrative facilities and lower cost for the commercial and economic activities of Congolese citizens, as well as better mobility in the eastern countries. The membership is also expected to lead to reduced tariffs for goods received at the ports of Mombasa (Kenya) and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). It will also be eligible for the EAC’s Collective Security Pact, with the assistance of countries such as Kenya and Tanzania, in the fight against several rebels.
