Statistics South Africa in its recently released data revealed that in the third quarter of this year, there were 32 000 housekeepers without employment. The reason is attributable to the financial pressure felt by middle-class households caused by inflation and fuel hikes. To add to that, some employers are moving abroad, winding up their operations in South Africa, another indicator of the poor economic performance of the country.

If an employer moves to another country, the worker’s right is to get a salary, notice pay and leave pay which works out to three weeks’ salary and severance pay for the years he/she has been employed.  That money is too little for an unemployed person to make both ends meet.

Employment agencies who hire workers for households and establishments say that a number of people have been laid off every day. Not many opportunities are there for domestic workers in the country. There is a scramble for getting jobs on a daily basis and some of the workers are willing to work at a reduced wage since for them it would bring some income rather than being unemployed.

In recent years, South Africa has had an average of one million employed domestic workers. However, this number is slowly shrinking as the economy faces a decline.
