Scuffles broke out during a meeting of the African Union parliament yesterday (Monday) over the election of their new president of the African Union. Lawmakers were shouting at the officials expressing their anguish about the next turn of the presidency.
The chaos erupted due to a disagreement between West and Central African countries and a block of states from southern Africa on whether the presidency should rotate among various regions of the continent.
The last two presidents of the Pan-African Parliament have been from West Africa. Southern African lawmakers have pointed out that not a single president of the African Union had come from a Southern African country, since its (AU) creation in 2004. The Parliament has been discussing this controversial issue for quite some time. Analysts say, it does not bode well for the African Union to have such disputes on leadership and feel that it may affect the future plans of the institution unless sorted out at the earliest.
