Digital infrastructure in Africa is growing with the passage of each year, Yet, the infrastructure is inadequate as the continent is in demand of more broadband connectivity, mobile telecom, and internet. The estimate puts that over 900 million people are still not connected to the internet across the continent.  Those who are connected are paying very high prices, forcing many who do not have the connection not to avail of one. There are instances when internet-connected people are refusing to renew them giving a major jolt to the wide use of the net, a pre-condition for heralding the digital economy.

These are the findings of the European Investment Bank, which was released at the Paris Infraweek recently. The findings of the study reveal that the continent, despite being a leader in areas such as mobile money, still lacks the digital infrastructure needed to support growth, trade, and jobs. The study estimates that to bridge the digital gap, the continent needs 250,000 new 4G base stations and at least 250,000 kilometers of fiber.
