According to De Beers, the global leader in diamond mining, Namibia is the only country out of the four diamond-mining operations, that has recorded growth. Diamond recovery in Namibia recorded a growth of 67.2% in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the same period the previous year. In terms of performance, according to official sources, South Africa, Botswana, and Canada all saw diamond production levels falling by 4%, 4%, and 24%, respectively.
The outstanding growth in diamond recovery is attributed to the introduction of the new diamond recovery vessel named the “Benguela Gem” the latest addition to Debmarine Namibia’s fleet. According to the magazine, International Mining, Benguela Gem will contribute N$3 billion a year to the Namibian economy. Owned and operated by Debmarine Namibia, a 50/50 joint venture, between the Government of the Republic of Namibia and the De Beers Group, the ship has the latest technology that can recover diamonds from deep within the ocean. The vessel valued at more than US$420 million with its state-of-the-art subsea crawling equipment can recover high-quality diamonds from the seabed as deep as 90 m to 150 m. It is also equipped with a system that optimizes its performance in changing weather conditions to minimize energy use and converts into fresh water through its heat recovery systems through a reverse osmosis plant. The vessel was designed and built in Europe, while the equipment was designed and built in Cape Town.
