The Government of Denmark has announced about 10 million USD to support UNICEF’s water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) Programme in Ethiopia. Speaking about the initiative, H.E. Kira Smith Sindbjerg, Danish Ambassador to Ethiopia remarked that sustainable access to clean water in Ethiopia and the whole of Africa was a key development priority for Denmark.
Severe shortages of clean water, sanitation and poor hygiene practices have left the children of Ethiopia prone to life threatening water borne diseases like diarrhoea. Further the country regularly faces climate shocks and currently is going through the most severe drought in decades. A large part of the three year funding will support to upgrade climate resilient and environmentally friendly water supply systems so that even during drought families will continue to have access to clean water.
The Danish support will also improve access to WASH services in schools and health facilities, increase the installation of water points and promote safe hygiene practices.
