Supporters of Republic of Congo’s incumbent president, Denis Sassou Nguesso are celebrating now his landslide victory in the recently held Presidential election. Sassou-Nguesso won the presidential election with 88.57% of the vote, the preliminary results from the electoral commission indicate.
The mandate would ensure the 77-year old ruler another five year period. He has already put in 36 years as the Head of the State and the present election would see him ruling the Central African Republic for over four decades.
His main rival in the current election Guy-Brice Parfait Kolelas died of coronavirus last Sunday, the election day. Kolelas could manage only 7.84% of the vote. The results have to be upheld by the Constitution Court, where it can be appealed. The election was boycotted by the main opposition parties and was held under an internet blackout. The election, according to the electoral observation mission of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), was conducted peacefully. There were 23 observers from organizations to monitor the elections. The turnout was 67.55%.
