Demonstrations are taking place in South Africa to give vent to people’s ire on the mismanagement of the economy and the perennial energy crisis the country has been facing. Demonstrators were asking President Ramaphosa to demit office for his inability to steer clear of the sickly economy.

It is reported that the turnout was very poor, which the opposition blames, thanks to the heavy deployment of police, who were fully prepared to stifle the unrest. The Economic Freedom Fighters, which has a leftist leaning and is the third-largest party in the country, had called for a nationwide shutdown. The government was apprehensive that the demonstrations would spark tensions and might lead to a situation of looting and arson as that had happened two years ago.

The protesters marched to Ramaphosa’s official residence shouting slogans for his resignation in the capital city of Pretoria. They wanted the president to leave the house, a euphemism for his immediate resignation. They also shouted against the price spiral and continuing energy crisis, which has crippled the country.

For fearing a repeat of what happened in 2021, Police have mobilized a large posse of security men around the city. But nothing of that sort has happened and demonstrations were largely peaceful except for the slogan shouting. By and large, the demonstration did not adversely affect civic life. Ordinary citizens were carrying out their pursuits as usual. Offices were working without much disruption. As such, there was no shutdown. Some business enterprises were closed due to the fear of intimidation.
