Delegation of UN, AU and ECOWAS to visit Guinea to de-escalate tension after election

·         As a precaution to preempt violent demonstrations, security forces are  patrolling  the deserted streets of the Guinean capital Conakry on Saturday

·         A delegation comprising of officials from the United Nations, the African Union and regional bloc ECOWAS will be visiting the capital city Conakry in the coming days in order to  de-escalate the stalemate in the west African country as it gathers momentum

As a precaution to preempt violent demonstrations, security forces are  patrolling  the deserted streets of the Guinean capital Conakry on Saturday. Earlier, there were clashes between supporters of  the opposition leader Cellou Diallo and the Police after President Alpha Conde was declared winner of last Sunday’s vote with nearly 60%.

In the meantime, opposition leader Cellou Diallo denounced ‘savage repression’ on his supporters. It is reported that he is virtually under siege in his own house surrounded by security people not allowing him to move out of his house. Cellou Diallo said that the dispute on the election will be referred to the constitutional court. According to him, more than 130 people have been killed in anti-Conde rallies since last October. There were incidents of death during the demonstrations after the election also.

In the meantime, Sékou Condé, permanent Secretary of the ruling RPG party called upon opposition leaders to lay down weapons, be calm and look forward to the future. Conde’s supporters held processions to celebrate the 82-year-old’s third consecutive win in the capital.

A delegation consisting of officials from the United Nations, the African Union and regional bloc ECOWAS will be visiting  the capital city Conakry in the coming days in order to  de-escalate the stalemate in the west African country as it gathers momentum.
