Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that Africa is beginning to see decline of COVID-19 infections since last two weeks. The spread of the COVID-19 outbreak was slow in Africa in the early stages of the pandemic. Africa’s caseload has remained relatively low compared to other continents, that is attributed to its relative isolation. Nevertheless, the rate of infection gradually picked up especially in South Africa, which now accounts for more than half of its case of more than 1.1 million. CDC pointed out that measures like mask-wearing and social distancing contributed to the slow down.

John Nkengasong, head of Africa CDC remarked that “We take this news with cautious optimism “and advised the schools to wait for some more time to open.

Last week new cases in Africa stood at 73,000 compared to 55,000 cases the previous week. The fall in the infections was mostly driven by South Africa, World Health Organisation (WHO)Regional Director, Matshidiso Moeti, told an online press conference.
