Death toll rises at the Ugandan floods

156

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. expressed condolences to families of twenty-six people who were killed in two areas – Elgon and Rwenzori due to flood and excessive rains, which caused landslides. He stressed that the loss of lives could have been averted if people relocated from the places notified by the government tp safer places. He insisted people to follow the government directions to avoid any future loss of lives.

It is reported that close to 6,000 people have been displaced in Bududa, a province known for its rugged area in the foothills of Mount Elgon. Mudslides had taken lives of hundreds of people over the years.  People living these areas have resisted the government’s efforts to relocate them  to lowlands. In the meantime, the government sources point out that there is the possibility of more rains and floods further making rescue operations difficult. The major loses had taken place in plantations, where hundreds of acres of crops including horticultural ones were damaged and livestock perished.
