Despite the introduction of a 14% U.S. tariff on urea fertiliser imports, Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote remains optimistic about his company’s export prospects. Speaking in Lagos, Dangote said the tariffs—initially announced under former U.S. President Donald Trump and now under a 90-day review—pose less of a challenge for Nigeria compared to Algeria, which faces a steeper 30% tariff. This, he noted, could provide a competitive edge for Nigerian exports.

While concerns arose among Nigerian exporters following the tariff announcement, Dangote’s remarks suggest that his group, which also operates in petroleum refining, cement, and petrochemicals, is well-positioned to maintain and grow its market share. He projects the Dangote Group’s revenues to increase from USD 25 billion in 2025 to over USD 30 billion by 2026, citing strong export performance and regional demand.

Trade experts caution that global trade dynamics and geopolitical factors may continue to impact fertiliser pricing and availability. Nonetheless, Dangote remains confident, stating, “After comparing the competition, we’re in a strong position.”
