Dangote Refinery has begun producing enhanced diesel that complies with Euro 5 standards, which impose strict emission limits for both gasoline and diesel engines, making it more eco-friendly. The refinery is anticipated to achieve full operational capacity within a month, having already reached 85% capacity by the end of January. By the end of February, Dangote aims to reduce the sulphur content in its petroleum products by introducing Euro 5-compliant fuels. This standard significantly lowers sulphur levels and sets rigorous limits on emissions, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, for gasoline, diesel engines, and motorcycles.

Since December, the refinery has produced diesel with sulphur content below 10 ppm, in line with its goal to reduce emissions before year-end. Last year, the refinery announced plans to export Euro 5 fuels following the start of operations at its 650,000 barrels per day facility. Devakumar Edwin, the Vice President for Oil and Gas, stated that the refinery intended to start exporting Euro 5-compliant diesel and gasoline by June of last year. Reports suggest that the sulphur content in the refinery’s diesel has been between 2 ppm and 3 ppm, well below the previous 10 ppm limit.

Furthermore, the facility is expected to start producing 10 ppm gasoline by the end of the month, ensuring adherence to Euro 5 standards. Currently, market participants report that the refinery produces gasoline with 50 ppm sulphur content. Overall, the refinery is on track to reach its full operational capacity within a month, having already achieved 85% capacity by the end of January.
