The rising demand for cement in Ethiopia seems to have encouraged Dangote Cement to undertake expansion of the project in Ethiopia. The company reportedly has started processing regulatory requirements needed to undertake the expansion project.

Though the Ministry of Mines of Ethiopia proposed investment in the fertilizer sector, it was rejected by the Business leader citing the political instability in Ethiopia. It may be recalled that Dangote owns the largest fertilizer plant in Africa, inaugurated this year in Nigeria. The Nigerian fertilizer factory with an estimated investment of around USD 2.5 billion, spreading over  500 hectares (1,235 acres) of land on the outskirts of Lagos  has a capacity to produce three million metric tons of urea yearly, making it the second largest plant in the world.

Feven Teshome, advisor to Takle Uma, Minister of Mines, confirmed that the expansion application of the Dangote cement plant is under review by his Ministry. It is learnt that  the expansion project will be undertaken for the existing plant located 90 km away from Addis Ababa in Mugher town, Oromia Region. Its current production capacity is 2.5 million tons of cement yearly. The plant started operations almost a decade ago.

Cement Companies in Ethiopia have seen a spate of expansion drive. East Africa Holdings, the parent company of National Cement and West China Cement Ltd, announced their plans to build a new cement factory in Amhara region, at a cost of over USD two billion. Last year, Derba Cement announced its plans to expand project to double its production capacity.
