Senegal until recently was considered as a stronghold of democracy. It also marked its place as a regional leader on diplomacy issues in West Africa. But simmering dissatisfaction among the citizens is seen leading to frequent demonstrations on the streets across the country.

Hundreds of Senegalese took to the streets of Senegal’s capital Dakar to protest against the government’s highhandedness detaining opposition leaders. People expressed their strong resentment against   President Macky Sall, who has been accused of interfering in judicial cases to suit his political interest.

Sall was first elected in 2012 after he defeated then-President Abdoulaye Wade, who sought a third term in office. Sall was re-elected in 2019 and has been facing growing criticism, particularly from those who fear that he too may seek to run for president again. The protesters called for the release of a leading member of the activist group Y’en a Marre. Mbissane Seck, who was arrested on visa trafficking charges. Earlier this year, there were strong protests across Senegal after an opposition politician, Ousmane Sonko who is regarded as a strong leader was accused of rape. His supporters alleged that the accusations were baseless and were targeted to spoil his political future.
