The BRT will connect 14 communes of Dakar from north to south. The large-capacity buses (approximately 150 seats) are set to carry some 300,000 passengers a day, which can help the city to decongest its traffic systems and improve urban mobility

Senegal’s capital Dakar pressed into service electric buses to ease the commutation problems of its people, to decongest the city, and to arrest the pollution. The introduction of e-vehicles is part of the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) being introduced by the city administration. Senegal’s  President Macky Sall inaugurated the fleet on 14th January, the fleet of 120 e-buses, which will be powered by solar energy.

The BRT will connect 14 communes of Dakar from north to south. The large-capacity buses (approximately 150 seats) are set to carry some 300,000 passengers a day, which can help the city to decongest its traffic systems and improve urban mobility.

Citizens are happy about the developments, hoping that it would ease their commutation in the city. They waste a lot of time even crossing a nearby place in a vehicle. Also, the pollution levels in the city were very high because of the high carbon emissions from the old and dilapidated vehicles.  The BRT was financed by the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, and the State of Senegal. It cost about 300 billion CFA francs (about US$500 million).
