Malawi Government has sought the support of its neighbour Zambia to reinforce Malawi Defence Force rescue operations to rescue victims of Cyclone Freddy which has devastated the country since last week. The initiative was taken amid a lack of equipment to use in the rescue operation.

The most affected areas are in the Southern Region districts of Blantyre, Chikwawa, Chiradzulu, Mwanza, Neno, Nsanje, halombe, Thyolo and Zomba.

Speaking about the rescue operations, Minister of Defence Harry Mkandawire said that the government of Malawi has requested the Zambian government to provide helicopters as some areas are inaccessible due to the damaged roads and bridges. Makhanga in Nsanje has been cut off after the Ruo River burst its banks, rendering hundreds homeless. Former Blantyre Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) stated that Mulanje, another place in Malonda Village, was also unreachable due to submerged and damaged roads and bridges. An avalanche that swept through Chilobwe Township led to 125 of the 225 deaths reported as of March 14.
