After passing Mauritius and causing torrential rain in the French island of La Reunion, Cyclone Batsirai came to Madagascar as predicted by the Meteo-France weather service. With winds of 165 kilometres (103 miles) per hour the cyclone completely destroyed Mananjary, , uprooting trees and destroying buildings.
Willy Raharijaona, technical adviser to the vice president of Madagascar’s Senate, reported that parts of the southeast had been cut off by flooding while the city of Nosy Varika was almost 95 percent destroyed.
