Both markets were locked on 3rd feb afternoon and heavily guarded by a contingent of police officers, soldiers, civil defense and other members of the joint task force. A statement by the Federal Capital Territory Administration said that the markets will remain closed for three days due to their failure to comply with COVID-19 protocols. The COVID-19 Health Protection Regulations 2021 was recently approved by President Muhammadu Buhari. Any violation of the regulation will attract strict action by the authorities. The Nigerian government is struggling to control the spiking cases of COVID 19. Nigeria has recorded over 134,000 Covid cases including 1,613 deaths so far.
Meanwhile, Kano state government has shut down UMC Hospital in the state capital. The move is to check the management allowing the admission of severe cases of COVID-19 instead of referring them to designated isolation centres in the state. The hospital had the mandate to attend only to mild cases of the disease. Admitting severe cases , led to deaths of two patients. The state commissioner for information, Malam Muhammad Garba stated that the hospital would remain closed pending resolution of the matter between the management and the state government.
