People are beginning to feel the economic effects of Niger’s coup and subsequent sanctions. The countries of the West Africa regional bloc known as ECOWAS imposed trade and financial sanctions to put pressure on the military to return the country to democratic control.
Although the markets are still full of goods, shoppers say food prices are already going up. Banking operations are mostly shut down, and there were reports that cash machines had stopped dispensing money. In the meantime, a spokesman for the French military said that any cooperation with Niger in the fields of development and financial aid and military partnerships had been suspended until further notice.

His comments came as nations across the world responded to the military coup in the country which saw soldiers detain democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum and seize power. The spokesperson said that all military agreements had been made with the democratically elected authorities in Niger and had been suspended while these authorities were not in power.
