The coup d’état in Niger did not come as a surprise according to some political analysts. It is one among the two Sahel countries along with Mauritania, not governed by a military regime. That way, the West African country was counted as a democratic country and a poster boy of the West.

Analysts say since February there have been hints of a coup d’état. It could have happened anytime. According to reports, which are still not confirmed, since different versions are afloat till this story is filed, mutinous elements detained the president. Also, Niamey, the capital, was more vulnerable to jihadist attacks since it was closer to insecure areas like the Tilabéri region and others, where there is the presence of considerable refugees.

The coup is a symptom of a backward slide in democracy. Along with that, corruption and poor governance catalyzed the process of disruption.  The coup will mostly affect young people and rural areas. Their job opportunities and development works respectively will be considerably dashed since insecurity prevents inflows of investments.
