Sudanese authorities have claimed that they have thwarted a coup attempt by loyalists of the ousted president Omar al-Bashir to derail the government. Former President Bashir was toppled from power in 2019. The country was trying to transition into a democracy. The ruling body, the Sovereign Council has run Sudan under a fragile power-sharing deal between the military and civilians since 2019.
Sudan’s military claimed that several army officers and soldiers had been detained in connection to the coup attempt. The coup attempt reflects the challenges faced by the government that is trying to overhaul the government and economic structure of Sudan since 2019. It managed to win Western debt relief and is taking steps to normalise ties with Israel while fighting a severe economic crisis.
Elections are expected to take place in 2024. Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok said in a televised statement that the coup attempt by Bashir loyalists was to abort the civilian democratic transition. Plotters he said tried to close national roads and ports and block oil production and tried to take control of state radio in Omdurman.
.The government spokesman Hamza Balol said on state TV that the suspected instigators had been arrested and the last pockets of rebellion at Al Shajara camp in south Khartoum were being dealt with.
