British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s immigration strategy is unfolding as authorities have started detaining migrants as part of preparations to relocate them to Rwanda. It is expected that within the next nine to 11 weeks the first plane load of migrants will be relocated to Kigali.
In April, Parliament endorsed legislation to facilitate the transfer of asylum seekers to Rwanda if they entered Britain without authorization. The government asserts that this policy will dissuade individuals from undertaking perilous journeys across the Channel. Tragically, several people lost their lives while crossing the rough seas, including children and women. As latest as last week, five people lost their lives while attempting the risky crossing.

Opposition to the policy from human rights organizations and unions is anticipated. Also, the UK Supreme Court’s ruling last year declared the policy unlawful. It is reported that migrants are being detained by immigration enforcement officials indicating the swift implementation of the policy, which is still resisted by human rights activists and courts alike. The House of Lords also put spokes to delay the project, which was overlooked by the House of Commons.
