In a bold move aimed at addressing the high cost of internet services in Ghana, Communications and Digitalisation Minister Samuel Nartey George has established a 23-member multi-sectoral committee. The group comprises representatives from the communications, energy, and finance ministries, as well as key regulatory bodies including the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

Tasked with delivering actionable recommendations within 14 working days, the committee’s mandate is clear: develop a comprehensive strategy to make internet access more affordable for Ghanaians. Minister George emphasised that the initiative is centered on public interest, not telecom profitability. “While telecommunications companies are commercial entities, current data pricing models are unsustainable and require urgent review,” he stated.

One of the most significant aspects of this effort is the involvement of the energy sector. According to the Minister, electricity accounts for roughly 80% of operational costs for network providers, making it a critical factor in pricing. Additionally, challenges such as currency instability and limited market competition have contributed to persistently high internet costs.

The committee will explore a range of solutions, including potential regulatory interventions, pricing models that favour consumers, and strategies to increase data volume offerings without corresponding price hikes.

Telecommunications companies, represented by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, have expressed their willingness to collaborate with the committee. In a rare show of solidarity, students, through the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), have also welcomed the initiative. NUGS emphasised the vital role affordable internet plays in modern education and applauded the government’s inclusive approach.

If successful, this initiative could usher in a new era of digital accessibility in Ghana, levelling the playing field and enabling more citizens to benefit from the transformative power of the internet.
