In a joint effort to oust President Ramaphosa from office, The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and the African Transformation Party (ATM), have stated that they want a secret vote of no confidence against Ramaphosa in the National Assembly. The move comes two months after the ATM tabled a section 89 motion to impeach the President on charges of violating the constitution in the Farmgate scandal. No confidence Motions are governed by section 102 of the Constitution and require a simple majority in the national assembly. However, the impeachment that falls under section 89 needs a two-thirds majority
The opposition stated that the removal of Ramphosa from office was necessary for an unhindered investigation of the alleged theft of $4 million from the private farm owned by him. They accused the President of abusing his power and concealing the theft.
The Opposition parties have been trying to reach a consensus on nominations to the three-person panel to advise the assembly on the prima facie evidence that Ramaphosa violated the constitution. After three meetings they have come to an agreement to nominate, former chief justice Mogoeng, former deputy chief justice Moseneke former constitutional court justice Mokgoro and former judge president Ngoepe.
