Coca-Cola Beverages Malawi Limited (CCBM), a subsidiary of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA), has unveiled a cutting-edge USD 14.9 million production line in Lilongwe, significantly boosting Malawi’s beverage manufacturing sector.
This advanced facility incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) to proactively detect and address potential issues, ensuring smooth operations, reducing downtime, cutting costs, and enhancing overall productivity. It represents one of Coca-Cola’s largest investments in the country to date.
The new line can produce up to 19,200 bottles per hour, accommodating sizes from 300ml to 2 litres, allowing CCBM to expand its range of beverages. This includes both Coca-Cola’s global products and popular local drinks like Sobo. The expanded capacity will also support exports to Zambia, strengthening Malawi’s position in the regional supply chain.
“This investment reflects our strong confidence in Malawi’s future,” said Sunil Gupta, CEO of CCBA. “It’s about more than just production — it’s about building a smarter, more resilient system that supports our entire ecosystem.”
In addition to scaling up output, CCBM is using the new technology to train staff in operating and maintaining AI-driven systems, equipping them with valuable digital skills. “This is about more than machines — it’s about empowering people,” said Neil French, CCBM’s general manager. “By embracing innovation, we’re preparing our workforce for the future.”
The initiative is also part of Coca-Cola’s broader strategy to create shared value by supporting local SMEs, which play a key role in its sourcing and distribution networks. Gupta reinforced Coca-Cola’s dedication to working closely with local communities: “We’re committed to producing, distributing, and sourcing locally whenever possible. This is a genuine partnership with Malawi.”
