Climate Change offers opportunities for Africa- IMF

Kristalina Georgieva the managing director of the International Monetary Fund said that climate change can create “excellent opportunities” for the private sector in Africa.

Addressing the COP 27climate summit in Egypt, she urged the continent to invest in the low-carbon economy that can generate jobs. She added that Jobs in renewable energy are much more and better paid than traditional jobs in coal mining. Georgieva made these comments at an event that aims at accelerating adaptation in Africa.

Speaking at the event, Patrick V. Verkooijen, CEO of Global Center on Adaptation, pointed out that there is a $40 billion adaptation funding gap for Africa which means loss of lives, loss of livelihoods and economic depreciation.

The world leaders at the COP27 in Egypt called for tougher action to tackle global warming urging fossil fuel companies to help pay for the damage they have caused to the planet. Kristalina Georgieva lamented that Africa was at the receiving end of the climate change facing famine, droughts, floods, and coastal erosion.
