Civil society organizations in Burkina Faso are against the imposition of sanctions by ECOWAS, as the West African leaders decided on Friday to suspend the country from the organization. Civil society has aired their apprehensions about what the sanctions would bring to the fore for the country, particularly for the poor people.
They urged the ECOWAS to be very careful with its sanctions against the people of Burkina Faso, since it would affect mainly the common people. They also feel that the country would become subordinated to the imperialist forces. In the meantime, ECOWAS reiterated their demand to release ousted president Roch MarcChristian Kaboré, placed under house arrest. The West African leaders are going to meet again on the 3rd of February in Accra.
Speaking for the first time since taking power, the new leader of Burkina Faso, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, said that his country needed partners more than ever. The international community is keenly watching the developments in the country. The present strongman is believed to be closer to France, the colonizer of the yester years. He also had his military training in France. The reason adduced for the coup is said to be lacklustre performance of the elected government inn handling the incessant Jihadists attacks, which had crippled the life of the civil society.
