The head of Mali’s ruling junta has called back a decree appointing a colonel as interim prime minister, paving the way for Choguel Kokalla Maiga, a civilian and political veteran who was appointed prime minister in June 2021 to return to the top job, according to reports.
Choguel Kokalla Maiga was forced to step aside in August after suffering a stroke at the age of 64. Mali’s top politician, Colonel Assimi Goïta, has repealed the 21 August decree recently. The return of Choguel Kokalla Maïga has been the subject of speculation for several days. Political analysts say that the interim leadership of Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga did not mark a break or significant inflection in the trajectory followed by the junta brought to power by the first coup in August 2020. This was further consolidated by a second coup in May 2021.
The major decisions are taken by the military. The two men are instrumental in breaking with the former French ally and its partners after May 2021. They are also tooling the military and political reorientation towards Russia.

Mali has been the epicenter of the spread of jihadism. Because of that, the west African country is facing a deep multidimensional, political, economic, and humanitarian crisis. On 25th November Choguel Kokalla Maiga met Colonel Goïta and apprised him about his improved health to take the pressures of the prime ministerial office, fuelling speculation that he would make a comeback.
