  • State Councillor and Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi, is on an official visit to Eritrea, Kenya and Comoros from January 4-7, 2021.
  •  Speaking about his visit, the Minister who is also a professor at the Institute of African Studies of Zhejiang Normal University stated that the three African countries enjoy traditional ties with China and intensified co-operation in the past decades.

State Councillor and Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi, is on an official visit to Eritrea, Kenya and Comoros from January 4-7, 2021. Speaking about his visit, the Minister who is also a professor at the Institute of African Studies of Zhejiang Normal University stated that the three African countries enjoy traditional ties with China and intensified co-operation in the past decades.

 He added that Eritrea which borders Ethiopia has been severely affected by the civil war in the Tigray region of Ethiopia and hoped that his visit will also contribute to peacebuilding and conflict mediation for the region.

Regarding his visit to Kenya, he said that Kenya continues to be a key partner of China in East Africa and also is an example of China-Africa cooperation to build the Belt and Road. He observed that the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway built by China made a vital contribution in strengthening regional interconnectivity, and the successful experiences could be replicated in more countries in the region.

China was the first country to recognize the independence of Comoros and build diplomatic ties. Chinese foreign minister’s visit is happening after a gap of 10 years and the visit is expected to deepen existing relations.

 He added that apart from strengthening bilateral cooperation and peacebuilding, cooperation to fight the COVID-19 pandemic will also be part of the agenda in the three countries.
